Horno de Pan/Bread Oven

El sitio

Periferia, topografía de montaña, lejos pero cerca.

Nos ubicamos en el cerro Auqui, una de las laderas que bordean la ciudad de Quito. Este se encuentra separado de la ciudad por un río, a 20 minutos en auto desde el centro. El sitio, a pesar de su cercanía, conserva su carácter rural y mantiene una relación visual importante con la ciudad, volviendo evidente la posible orientación de la casa para aprovechar este recurso.

El terreno donde se emplaza la casa tiene un desnivel mediano y mucha naturaleza, eucaliptos, pinos, huertos y animales. 

Por lo tanto la casa se direcciona a las vistas y se acopla a la topografía accidentada mediante un juego de niveles.

The place

Outskirts, mountain topography, far but close.

We are located on Auqui Hill, one of the slopes that border the city of Quito. Even though a river separates it from the city, it is a 20-minute drive to downtown.

The site, despite its proximity, retains a rural essence. It maintains an important visual relationship with the city, making the orientation of the project evident.

The land has a medium slope and diverse nature in its surroundings: eucalyptus trees, pines, orchards, and animals. Therefore, the project is positioned in the direction of the main view and it adapts itself to the uneven topography through a set of levels.

La fuerza del material

Elegimos al ladrillo como posibilitador del proyecto debido a su alta inercia térmica, característica que permite resolver el confort térmico al interior del proyecto a pesar de las variaciones térmicas exteriores. Buscando explotar las capacidades estructurales del material se piensa en cómo este puede resolver integralmente los requerimientos del proyecto; límites verticales y horizontales; estructura, paredes y cubierta. Para los elementos verticales resolvemos unos muros de ladrillo portantes, que además aportan más masa para el control del confort térmico al interior. Para la cubierta utilizamos una bóveda rebajada, geometría que permite resolver un elemento horizontal con ladrillo que, por encontrarnos en una zona sísmica, se refuerza con una carpeta de hormigón armado de 3cm de espesor, obteniendo una cubierta ligera y de una amplia superficie. Este sistema constructivo permitió reducir al máximo el uso de hormigón y acero en el proyecto. 

The strength of the material

Bricks were chosen as the enabler of the project due to their high thermal inertia. This allows solving the thermal comfort inside the project despite the variations of the temperature outside.

Additionally, it is intended to exploit the structural capabilities of the material. Bricks solve the project´s vertical and horizontal limits, structure, and roof. The vertical elements are solved with wide load-bearing brick walls, which provide mass for thermal comfort inside. The roof utilizes a lowered vault, a geometry that allows solving a horizontal element with brick. But, because the project’s location is a seismic zone, the vault is reinforced with a 3cm-thick concrete layer, obtaining a light cover with a large surface area. This construction system made it possible to minimize the use of concrete and steel in the project.

El hábitat, un gran Horno de Pan

La vivienda debe ser acogedora, cómoda y mínima (48m2) porque cuenta con dos etapas más de construcción que se resolverán a futuro y que dotarán a ésta de nuevos usos y otros espacios.

The house must be cozy, comfortable, and minimal (48m2) since it has two future stages of construction, that will provide new areas for other activities.

El sistema constructivo es un envolvente homogéneo que aporta libertad de intervención y de apropiación del espacio interior. 

Los tres niveles interiores permiten la distribución de los espacios: el acceso/baño, la sala/comedor/cocina, y el dormitorio/estudio, manteniendo una relación directa con las visuales a la ciudad y al campo.

As a result of the construction system, we obtain a homogeneous envelope that provides an open floor plan. This characteristic allows future intervention and appropriation of the interior space.

The three interior levels distribute the uses: the access/bathroom, the living/dining room/kitchen, and the bedroom/studio. All of which maintain a direct relationship with the city and countryside views.

Resolviendo la arquitectura, como un gran horno de pan que, se asienta en la montaña y se prende conforme a sus usos y los habitantes.

This way the architecture is solved through a large bread oven structure that sits on the mountain and lights up (as a lamp) according to its use.
